An HIV vaccine is the glittering prize of drug R&D. Its development would also alleviate a political embarrassment. In 1992 the US Government promised a vaccine within two years; 25 years of research and tens of millions of dollars later, no one has found it. There are now drugs undergoing Phase 1 & 2 trials – one stage short of the Phase 3 trial that will secure a licence.
